Certified Nurse Aide Requirements in Oklahoma

Oklahoma recognizes six different types of Certified Nurse Aide, or CNA. The following certifications are issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Health:

• Long Term Care Aide
  
• Home Health Aide
  
• Developmentally Disabled Direct Care Aide
  
• Adult Day Care Aide
  
• Residential Care Aide
  
• Medication Aide
  

Long Term Care Aides, Home Health Aides, and Developmentally Disabled Direct Care Aides all have at least 75 hours of education and training. Adult Day Care Aide and Residential Care Aide status requires fewer training hours. Medication Aide, on the other hand, requires a second training program, completed after the first credential is earned.

The classification that is most comparable to the ‘CNA’ credential issued in many U.S. states is Long Term Care Aide.

Graduation and certification Requirements

Upon graduation, each CNA/CHHA student will take a Clinical Test. This is a hands-on demonstration of required skills. This test is pass/fail. Once a student passes the Clinical Test, they are eligible to take the Written Test. This test is multiple choice. A student must receive a passing score of 70% or better to receive certification. Clinical and Written test fees are not included in the tuition price.

For each student that successfully completes the CNA/CHHA Certification tests: 1. Their name and Nurse Aide certification number will be listed on the Oklahoma State Nurse Aide Registry. 2. The Oklahoma State Department of Health will issue certificates via email.

Certification Testing Fees are not included in the tuition price. A representative from the testing site will visit during class so that students can schedule the CNA/CHHA test and pay the testing fee directly to the testing site. You may choose not to use a different testing site. If so, your testing fee may vary. Contact your testing site to verify testing fees.

Admission Requirements

• Students who are under 18 must either have a High School Diploma OR a GED OR sign the enrollment agreement jointly with a parent or guardian.
  
• An Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) background check will be submitted for each student. This report must be clear of felony convictions for certain specified crimes or the student is ineligible for instruction. A list of the felonies can be obtained in the business office.
  
• Students must have good hearing and eyesight with corrective appliances as needed.
  
• Students must have sufficient physical capabilities to complete training and avail themselves of employment opportunities. The curriculum for this program is based on the duties required for job performance. Following is a list of functions, many of which require physical capabilities. Tasks include but are not limited to: Bed Baths, Assistance with Dressing/Undressing, Routine Mobility, Feeding, Grooming, Changing an Occupied/Unoccupied Bed, Transferring, Mouth Care, Taking /Recording Vital Signs, Hand Washing, Hair & Nail Care.
